On Thursday 20th April, Beneficiary Ambassadors Sandra Morgan and Deonne Peters attended the Ending Homelessness Conference, hosted by homeless charity, Crisis.
The agenda included an overview of the Homelessness Reduction Bill, the potential role of Housing First, and Government plans for ending homelessness. Speakers included The Rt Hon Sajid Javid, Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, and Dr Sam Tsemberis, Founder of Pathways to Housing.
Both Sandra and Deonne described the day as rewarding and inspirational. They were able to meet and talk to Bob Blackman MP for Harrow East, who is the Sponsor for the Homelessness Reduction Bill. They also spoke to Dr Sam Tsemberis and found his presentation on the Housing First approach very informative. Breakout sessions included 'Definition of ending homelessness' and 'Changing the culture of homelessness services'. Sandra and Deonne obtained lots of information from these sessions, and will be utilising this information within their work at Opportunity Nottingham.
During the conference, Sandra and Deonne spoke with Matthew Downie, Director of Policy and External Affairs at Crisis about the Opportunity Nottingham project. Matthew offered to come and talk to the Opportunity Nottingham Expert Citizen Group, and we hope to arrange this for early summer 2017.
